Professor Kam Chan Hin
was appointed Deputy Provost (Education) with effect from August 2016. He was Associate Provost (Undergraduate Education) in April 2011 and Senior Associate Provost (Undergraduate Education) from April 2014. As Deputy Provost (Education), he is responsible for the strategic oversight of all aspects of undergraduate and graduate education, including residential education, student life and professional and continuing education. He coordinates the implementation of various initiatives in education, such as technology-enhanced learning, teaching & learning and pedagogy. He also oversees academic quality assurance and governance processes as part of his education portfolio.
Prof Kam is Professor of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. He joined the Nanyang Technological Institute in 1984 and was Academic Vice‐Dean (1996 to 2005) and Dean/ Chair (2006‐2011) of the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. As Dean/Chair, he laid the foundation for the School’s rapid rise into a world-class institution (7th in QS World Subject Ranking 2015)
He was a founding member of the Photonics Research Lab in 1994 which became Optimus Photonics Centre of Excellence in 2011. He has received more than S$8 million in competitive research grants and published more than 250 journal and conference papers in the areas of Photonics, Optics and High Energy Physics. He holds 8 international patents in surface acoustic wave devices and sol‐gel photonics. His current research interests are in the areas of sol‐gel photonics, quantum optics of nanostructures, quantum transport and nanophotonics.
Prof Kam is a Registered Professional Engineer with the Singapore Professional Engineers Board and a Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering, Institution of Engineers, Institute of Physics and Senior Life Member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers.
He served on the advisory committees of the University of Hong Kong, Temasek and Singapore Polytechnics, Institute for Technical Education and was a member of the Public Service Commission Scholarship Board. In 2002, he served on the Professional Engineers Board’s Task Force on the accreditation of engineering education in Singapore and the establishment of the Singapore Engineering Accreditation Board. Currently, Prof Kam serves as a Member of the Board of Governors of Temasek Polytechnic and is the Chairman of the Temasek Polytechnic Engineering School Advisory Committee. He also serves as a Member of the National Institute of Education Council, Ministry of Education - Workforce Development Agency (MOE-WDA) Skills Development Council, Singapore Armed Forces (SAF)-NTU Academy, Singapore Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Practitioners Board, Singapore TCM Practitioners Board Academic Committee and the Singapore Power Engineering Board. For his outstanding contribution to education, he was conferred the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2008 by the Singapore Government.
